Powerhouse Wizard 2005
Khoa Do, a 26-year old film maker from Sydney’s south-west was the recipient of the 2005 Powerhouse Wizard award.
Khoa, a writer, director and actor, is widely acclaimed and recognised for his debut feature film, The Finished People (2004), and short-film Delivery day (2001). The Finished People, produced as a community film project with the help of youths from Sydney’s South-west, was nominated for two AFI Awards, three Film Critics’ Circle Australia Awards and two Australian Writers’ Guild Awards in 2004.
Khoa has long been involved in youth social issues and community arts, and champions the need to bridge gaps in social, cultural and economic barriers. He is also the recipient of the 2005 Young Australian of the Year award.
In 2006 Khoa Do released his second feature film Footy Legends. Set in Sydney’s western suburbs the film tells the story of Luc, and his six mates, who enter a footy tournament to save their families and bring hope back to their community. As well as directing the film, Khoa also co-wrote the film with his brother Anh Do and sister-in-law, Suzanne Do.
During his term as Powerhouse Wizard, Khoa participated in a range of programs including Powerhouse Museum and Wizard Home Loans preview screening of Footy Legends with guest appearances from cast and crew members. Khoa also contributed a feature article for the Spring 06 issue of Powerline and participated in the judging of the 2006 Powerhouse Wizard award.
Two finalists in the Powerhouse Wizard were also awarded in 2005. The finalists were: Genevieve Lacey, acclaimed recorder virtuoso, and Zoe MacDonell, textile artist and designer.
