Talk: A game for racehorses: Ian Heads talks rugby league
To mark the opening of League of Legends: 100 Years of Rugby League in Australia at the Powerhouse Museum, noted sports historian, journalist and author Ian Head will tackle the game's controversies, characters and dramatic events on a journey through League’s first century, from the game's formation in 1908 to the damaging Super League war of modern times.

Monday 8 September, 2.00 pm
Tour: Australian quilts in the Powerhouse Museum collection
Join curator Christina Sumner for a behind-the-scenes look at selected quilts from the Powerhouse Museum collection. Pieced, patched, embroidered and quilted, these coverlets reflect women’s designing and needlework skills, as practised in the home in Australia from the late 1800s to mid 1900s.

Tour:  Instrument-making on the coast
During the 19th century coastal cities such as Sydney and Melbourne saw not only the growth in music making but also the arrival of instrument makers proficient in a variety of instrument types. Powerhouse Museum curator Michael Lea leads this tour looking at some of the Museum’s large collection of instruments and stories about particular Australian makers.

Talk: Democratic leisure: modern swimming pools and sports stadiums come to Sydney
The modern swimming pool and sports stadium are among the most distinctive products of the Modern movement, creating artificial, stylised environments for age-old activities. In this talk Powerhouse Museum curator Charles Pickett traces the adaptation and history of these venues in Sydney.

Join curator Anne-Marie Van de Ven on a behind-the-scenes tour providing a glimpse into the Museum's rich archive of historical design-related photographs, from published and unpublished photomontages of the 1930s through to portraits of Australian artists and designers.

Shoe fetishists take note! Step deep into the basement store of the Powerhouse Museum with curator, Rebecca Bower, to view shoes from all over the world collected over several centuries. Exquisitely crafted fashion shoes from London shoemaker, Joseph Box, and 20th century high fashion shoes will no doubt delight you.

Exhibition tour: The curious economist: William Stanley Jevons in Sydney
Join Powerhouse Museum curator Matthew Connell on a tour of an exhibition looking at the work and activities of one of the founders of modern economics, William Stanley Jevons, who lived in Sydney from 1854 to 1859. The inquiring mind of William Stanley Jevons speculated on a wide range of ideas in philosophy, economics, social and urban studies, chemistry, geography and meteorology.

Tour: A walking tour of Pyrmont and Ultimo
A walk along Harris Street is a journey through history. For hundreds of years the distinctive suburbs of Pyrmont and Ultimo have provided places for work, leisure and housing for its varying population. Join curator Anni Turnbull to hear tales from some of the residents and view remnants of its industrial past.

Talk: Venus of the South Seas – the Annette Kellerman collection
Australia’s Annette Kellerman, the creator of the women’s one-piece swimsuit, became an international celebrity as an endurance swimmer, an entertainer of the vaudeville stage and a star of American silent films. Curator Peter Cox presents a talk revealing how objects in the Powerhouse Museum’s collection illuminate the Annette Kellerman story.
