The Museum is a dynamic environment in which recently learned skills and knowledge gain relevance, through work experience students will have the opportunity to:

  • Observe a variety of work being done
  • Undertake supervised work appropriate to the student’s skill level
  • Gain a realistic understanding of workplace practices and issues

What will you learn during Work Experience at the Powerhouse Museum
While doing work experience at the Powerhouse Museum you will engage with young visitors to provide enhanced access to the Powerhouse Museum interactive gallery spaces. The role is a good opportunity to gain skills operating in a ‘hands on’ event role in a public environment. Each day you will be set a program of the days tasks and will de-brief with the supervisor each afternoon.

This position is ideal for volunteers wishing to gain experience in Museums, Entertainment, Education programs and/ or Visitor Services.

Tasks Students Perform

  • Assisting volunteers and staff with the Museum’s Public Programs
  • Welcoming and directing visitors to the Museum
  • Assist Education staff with operation of holiday programs
  • Assisting staff with ‘thinkspace’ workshops. (Thinkspace is the Powerhouse Museum’s digital learning precinct, offering workshops and short courses designed to develop creative and media production skills)

Dates
Work experience is only offered during the NSW school holiday periods. In 2012 these are:
2 - 29 January
7 - 22 April
30 June - 15 July
22 September - 7 October

If you are unable to do work experience during these dates, but would like to be involved with the Powerhouse Museum, please look at the Youth Volunteer Program.

Insurance and Indemnity Information
As with any work experience program, the request to participate in the Powerhouse Museum Student Placement Program, must be made in consultation with the student’s school, TAFE college or university.

Individuals taking part in the Student Placement Program have no claim on the Powerhouse Museums’ Workers compensation Insurance, therefore participating schools, TAFE colleges and universities must provide details of student insurance cover before the placement begins.

Tertiary Internships
If you are interested in undertaking an internship with the Powerhouse Museum (please note a VERY limited number of internships are offered) please send a cover letter directly to the Volunteer Centre volunteercentre@phm.gov.au outlining your tertiary institution and its academic requirements and your interest, experience and time requirements.
