NARNIA FANS WE NEED YOU
We are calling for volunteers to assist at the Powerhouse Museum from the 12 May – 26 August 2012 with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition
Volunteers working in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition will enrich the visitors’ experience by providing information and instruction about the artefacts and interactives. Volunteers will create a welcoming environment for visitors and provide excellent customer service by:
- Assisting with welcoming and directing visitors to the exhibition
- Assisting with crowd control inside and outside the exhibition
- Explaining the stories and technology behind the interactives and artefacts
- Assisting visitors to move smoothly through the exhibition space
Skills and abilities required to become a Narnia volunteer
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- An interest in the Narnia Chronicles
- Capacity to work with people from all ages and backgrounds
- A strong commitment to providing a high standard of customer service
- Able to participate in training
- Ability to commit to volunteer work on a regular basis
- Willingness to commit to the Museum’s mission and values
- Narnia volunteers must be 16 years or older
- Approved costumes are encouraged (please attach a photo with your application)
Hours and days for Narnia volunteers
9.00am – 4.00 pm weekdays and weekends
Volunteers must volunteer for a minimum of 6 days total.
This can be a regular day per week, or a block period during the school holiday periods.
About the Exhibition
Once inside The Chronicles of Narnia exhibition, visitors will encounter several fun, hands-on elements including
- A replica of the White Witch's Throne where visitors can sit and feel the chill of the icy throne;
- An interactive frozen waterfall, icy to the touch, with a display on the science behind why water freezes.
- A model of King Miraz's Castle, which offers visitors the opportunity to build an arch and learn about the principles of its design and structure.
- An area highlighting the mythical creatures of Narnia, which allows visitors to create their own creatures featured in the films.
- A large-scale map of Narnia’s world highlights locations from the famous story.
- A metal armor suit and swords can be touched and lifted to experience their tremendous weight.
- A working catapult demonstrates how this medieval device can hurl an object great distances.

Volunteer with the Powerhouse Visitor Services Team
Powerhouse Visitor Services volunteers support the public program activities of the Education Program Development Department by greeting visitors and taking orientation walks; conducting tours; giving exhibition, object and special event talks and assisting with school holiday programs and demonstrations; assisting staff with education briefings and education packages and assisting groups with teacher guided visits; meeting and greeting booked adult groups and assisting people with a disability or frail aged visitors. Powerhouse Visitor Services Volunteers also provide services to groups in the community via the outreach program, where they visit organisations outside of the Museum.
Key Volunteer Tasks
Reception and orientation - welcoming visitors, taking orientation walks and providing directions to facilities and exhibitions
Visitor Programs - conducting tours, exhibition, object and special event talks and assisting with school holiday programs and demonstrations
School Programs - assisting staff with school briefings and school activities and assisting school groups with teacher guided visits
Special Groups - meeting and greeting booked groups including those with special needs
Outreach - Visiting community groups and institutions such as nursing homes and service clubs to speak about the Powerhouse Museum
Skills and Abilities Required
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and an outgoing personality.
- Strong commitment to providing a high standard of customer service.
- Prior experience with public speaking.
- Demonstrated interest and/or experience in one or more of the following: Social History, Science and Technology, Computer Science, Decorative Arts, Industry and Design.
- Able to participate in training.
- Ability to commit to volunteer work on a regular basis.
Hours & Days
Weekday volunteers - 1 day a week, 9.30 - 4.00
Weekend volunteers - 1 to 2 days per month, 9.30 - 4.00

Powerhouse Youth Volunteers
Powerhouse Youth volunteers provide assistance to the Education and Visitor Services staff and work with the holiday programs scheduled for that period. Youth Volunteers provide a high standard of service to the visitor, welcoming them to the museum, providing accurate and consistent information about the museum, its exhibitions and holiday activities.
Hours and Days:
Hours: 9:30am – 3:30pm holidays
Days: Minimum of 4 days (January 4 – January 24)
We are looking for volunteers (aged 16–21) with the following skills:
Ability to work as part of a team
Good communication skills and an outgoing personality
Training/ experience in working with young people, children and families
This position is ideal for students wishing to gain experience in Early Childhood, Education Programs, Visitor Services, Museum Studies and Tourism.
The Youth Volunteer Program is part of the overall Visitor Services Volunteer Program. Youth Volunteers will receive the same benefits and acknowledgements as all Museum volunteers.
