The AIDS crisis
“I have learned more about love, selflessness and human understanding in this great adventure in the world of AIDS than I ever did in the cut-throat, competitive world in which I spent my life.” Anthony Perkins, actor, 1932–1992
In the early 1980s news reports surfaced of a deadly disease that became known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Scientists later identified its cause as a virus (HIV). Australia led the world in AIDS prevention, with the gay community in particular rallying to educate people about the virus. The Australian AIDS quilt project began in 1988 as a memorial to thousands of people in this country who died of HIV/AIDS.
