Machines & Transport
Stage 2 Science and Technology and COGs

Both the Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo and Powerhouse Discovery Centre, Castle Hill are ideal for studying different types of machines, various mode of transport and the changes these machines bring. The Marvellous Machines Drawing Adventure of the Powerhouse Museum and the Weird and Wacky Machines of the Powerhouse Discovery Centre are ideal for Stage 2 Science and Technology units on ‘Out and About’ and ‘Making it easy’, and COGs unit on ‘Machines’.  

Marvellous Machines is a teacher-guided program that engages years 3 to 5 in exploring, observing and understanding machines by drawing them. By observing and drawing the machines, students focus on how simple machines work, separately and in combination. Teachers will be provided with comprehensive support materials which include background notes for teachers, the Marvellous Machines Slidecast and its script. The slidecast helps teachers better prepare students for the visit. It provides students with the necessary framework and understandings in making the most out of the museum visit.
Cost: $7 per student (including a copy of the Marvellous Machines Drawing Adventure drawing book for each student)
Length: 90 to 120 minutes

Weird and Wacky Machines is a guided program that includes a multimedia introductory presentation and a tour of the Display store.
Cost: $7 per student /$4 PSP Schools 
Available: Tuesdays - Fridays, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm
Length: 90 minutes

Case Studies
These are studies in a case located throughout the Museum for students to examine exhibition objects up close. Exhibitions where you might find Case Studies include Inspired! Design across time, Ecologic, Boulton & Watt and Locomotive No 1 (good if you are studying machines), Musical instruments (Good vibrations will help students understand how vibration creates sound), Cyberworlds (Moving image will help students appreciate how different mechanical devices create animation) and Never done (featuring changes in home technologies and clothing). The menu of Case Studies can change daily so check on arrival and look for the black road cases with the words ‘Case Study’ on the side.

The Powerhouse Discovery Centre: Collection Stores at Castle Hill
The Powerhouse Discovery Centre at Castle Hill offers public access to the extensive and diverse collection of the Powerhouse Museum, much of which has never been displayed before.. It will be open from 13 March for school visits, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm, Tuesdays – Fridays.
