Areas of Professional Advice and Project Assistance

The team at the Powerhouse Museum can provide professional advice and assistance to local and regional museums, historical societies, community groups and committees across a range of areas.

Research and curatorial assistance
Curators can provide advice about conducting research and on collecting and collections. Collaborative projects with regional institutions are encouraged. A site visit by a curator for consultations or workshops can often be arranged.

Collection management
Seminars and workshops are provided in regional locations on a range of issues including contemporary conservation and registration practices. Specialist advice and technical information can be provided by telephone or email, or a site visit may also be possible.

Exhibitions
Powerhouse staff can provide specialist advice on exhibition planning, costing and design, and venue development.

Exhibition texts and publishing
Specialist advice on writing and presenting text (for example theme panels and labels for display in exhibitions) and also publishing (from fliers to books) is also available. The Powerhouse house style and label manuals are available for purchase - contact Powerhouse Publishing 

Museum learning
Public and education programs are an important way to enhance exhibitions and a visitor’s experience. Visits to observe Powerhouse programs can be arranged and program details, teaching materials and advice on the current school curriculum is available – contact edserv@phm.gov.au.

Promotion and marketing
Specialist advice in the areas of Public Relations, media campaigns and advertising can be requested from the
Marketing & Communications Department, which manages the with the Powerhouse’s brand and promotion of its exhibitions and programs.

Digital, Social & Emerging Technologies
Specialist advice in the areas of online, social media, mobile and other emerging technologies is also available.

Volunteer programs
Volunteers are the backbone of many smaller museums and galleries. Specialist advice on how to recruit, train, and retain volunteers, as well as the policies needed for such programs is also available.

Facilities Management
Specialist advice on the management of museum buildings and facilities is available from the Facilities Management department.
