Trade Winds: arts of Southeast Asia

Trade Winds

Visitors to Trade Winds: arts of Southeast Asia were able to explore centuries of decorative arts from Southeast Asia in this stunning exhibition drawn from the Powerhouse Museum collection. An exquisite array of objects from across this fascinating region were displayed together for the first time in the Museum's Asian Gallery.

Featuring a range of historical and contemporary objects from Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines, this exhibition highlighted how tradition, trade and colonisation have shaped the artistic diversity of this region.

On display were magnificent textiles and dress, jewellery and metalwork, ceramics, leatherwork, musical instruments and basketry of Southeast Asia. Visitors were able to find out more about the lives and cultures of the people who made these remarkable objects.
