Taking precautions: the story of contraception

The plastic IUD

Introduced in the 1960s, the plastic IUD never became as popular as the Pill in Australia and the USA. The IUD (intra-uterine device) received bad press in the 1970s when the Dalkon Shield IUD was found to be responsible for serious infections in many women.

The IUDs available today are safer than they were, and doctors are more cautious about who they prescribe them for. However, the perception that they are unsafe persists.

Since the 1970s consumer groups have kept watch on multinational companies, including those that produce modern contraceptives. Because they are now afraid of being sued, many large companies have stopped their research into contraceptives. The search for the perfect contraceptive continues, but not as fast it might.
