The career of Australian-born designer Marc Newson has been
remarkably successful. Since graduating in jewellery and sculpture from
Sydney College of the Arts in 1984, he has worked from studios in Sydney,
Tokyo, Paris and most recently London. Today he is one of the world’s
most innovative, versatile and high-profile designers.
Comprising over 200 objects, this was the first major retrospective of
Marc Newson’s work and surveyed the extraordinary range of his career
to date, from furniture and interiors, to watches and homewares, from
a bicycle to a car and even a private jet. Highlights of the exhibition
included the sleek aluminium Lockheed lounge, the neoprene-clad
Embryo chair, product design for Alessi, the award-winning MN02
bicycle for Biomega as well as a range of current projects.
Drawings, models, prototypes and multimedia programs provided insights
into Newson’s creative method, the varied technical processes involved
in the production of his work, and the marketing initiatives that have
contributed to the international scope of his reputation. Constantly in
demand by private and corporate clients, Marc Newson’s work is also represented
in museum collections throughout the world.
