Curriculum links
The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy — The Exhibition provides a rewarding experience for primary, secondary and tertiary students in the following subject areas: English, science, design and technology, ICT and multimedia, media and filmrelated studies, and visual arts.

The exhibition is of particular relevance to students studying HSC English Extension Course 1. The first film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings is a prescribed film in the speculative fiction module.

Teachers guide
A special teachers guide is available to complement class visits. The guide highlights some of the challenges facing the film-makers and suggests activities for students to come up with their own solutions to production problems. The activities can be adapted for students of all ages, from grades 5 and over.

Educational themes covered in the teachers resource guide include using digital technology for audio and visual special effects, using science materials to produce realistic props, and the technology behind film production, from scaling and perspective to set building.

The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy — The Exhibition can be combined with a session in the SoundHouse™, the Museum’s state-of-the-art digital studio for the exploration and creation of sound, music and multimedia projects. Or combine your visit with a large-screen film experience at the IMAX Theatre. Enquire about these special discounted packages when booking. (See box below.)

Lord of the Rings — music for the movies
Combine the exhibition experience with a hands-on
workshop at the SoundHouse™. Students create an original music mix inspired by Lord of the Rings story themes and characters using Sony’s Acid Pro
software. Class projects are burnt onto CD to keep.

Film as text study days — for HSC students and teachers
The Powerhouse Museum and the Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) present the perfect opportunity to delve into the narrative world of The Lord of the Rings. A screening of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring will be followed by a lecture on themes and topics specific to HSC study of the film as text. Time will be available for a question and answer session for students and teachers.

IMAX Theatre joint visit
