Cars and culture: our driving passions

Car of the future model by Charles Frederick Beauvais, 1936

This rare wooden model for a car of the future was made by Charles Beauvais in 1936.

Charles Beauvais was a committed futurist and technocrat whose illustrations of streamlined cars, trams, aircraft and cities of the future appeared regularly in newspapers and magazines. Before moving to Melbourne in 1938, he worked in England for Crossley, the company that built the experimental Burney Streamlined car in 1930. Beauvais’ model adopts the rear-engined layout used for the Burney and the tear-drop profile that early wind tunnel tests showed was fastest through the air.
