The Museum is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed under the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Act 1945. The Trustees oversee the management and policy direction of the Museum. They meet regularly to consider and give formal approval to major procedural and policy matters on advice from management.
Mission Statement
The Powerhouse Museum develops collections and presents exhibitions and programs that explore science, design and history for the people of New South Wales and beyond.
Vision
The Powerhouse will further its reputation as a museum that celebrates human creativity and innovation in ways that engage, inform and inspire diverse audiences.
History
In 1879, Sydney staged an international exhibition, a showcase of invention and industry from around the world. A magnificent building, the Garden Palace, was built in the Botanic Gardens to house the exhibition. Sadly, a fire swept through the building in 1882, destroying virtually all it held, but the impetus for the Museum survived.
The Museum was relocated several times, and with a burgeoning collection, secured its final home in 1988 in a new building constructed from the shell of an old power station. The Ultimo power station dates back to 1899 when it was built to power Sydney's electric tram system, which ceased operations in 1963.
The entrance building is the only new addition and its design complements the vastness of the original spaces.
