Get ready for a real Winter treat as the PowerhouseMuseum’s next Craft Punk weekend focuses on body-hugging creativity with draping, constructing, coiling and decorating.
Book a workshop led by design industry experts and create a re-constructed Winter garment or a beautiful contemporary neck-piece using Indigenous Pacific Island traditional coiling techniques. Or drop in to the all day open session and make a Japanese inspired wrapping cloth or decorate a hankie.
Craft Punk: Wrapped! is the latest in a series of weekend programs aimed at harnessing the creative energy of a vast community of people crafting beautiful and edgy work. The program offers a space where people can meet, make and share skills. Be inspired to start a new project, learn a new skill, tackle a tricky pattern or just rekindle your love of making. Craft Punk is all about giving you the tools to take making into your own hands!

Re-constructing knitwear: create an up-cycled machine knitted garment

Designer Alana Clifton-Cunningham will show you how to create a gorgeous winter garment such as a shrug, vest, wrap or other body warmer by reassembling pre-constructed knitted shapes. Working on individual dress mannequins and by hand sewing or using a sewing machine or overlocker, Alana will take you through the process of designing three dimensionally, learning to drape and experimenting with form. Embellish your final design with small laser-cut pieces of leather designed by Alana plus zippers and assorted haberdashery. All materials supplied. Bring a camera to document your process.
Alana Clifton-Cunningham is a designer of contemporary machine knitting and a lecturer in Fashion and Textile, Design faculty at UTS,Sydney. Alana has exhibited her work at the International Fashion Art Biennale inSeouland her work is currently on tour with the Tamworth Textile Triennial.
Pacific wrapping: contemporary breast plates inspired by Indigenous Pacific culture

Contemporary artist Maryann Talia Pau will teach you how to create a gorgeous breast plate, necklace or body adornment using a coiling technique that is indigenous to the Pacific region. Gain insight into how Maryann adopts traditional weaving techniques from the Pacific region and her native Samoa to create contemporary body adornments with an edgy twist. Maryann will also demonstrate some simple stitches to decorate your work. All materials supplied including some unusual traditional and non-traditional materials.
Maryann Talia Pau is a Melbourne-based Samoan contemporary artist and weaver who has her own label called Mana Couture. Maryann’s creations are in the collection of National Gallery of Victoria and are currently showing in the Art of the Pacific Gallery. Her work was also featured in L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion week in 2011.

Create a Japanese inspired wrapping cloth to cover a small gift or decorate a hankie with simple tacking stitch and appliqué. All materials supplied. Suitable for ages 12 years and over, children should be accompanied by an adult.
