Love Lace Winners Announced: Life-size crocheted car engine takes first prize

Thursday 28 July 2011: American sculptor, Anne Mondro, is the winner of the third Powerhouse Museum International Lace Award announced today at the Museum by Director, Dr Dawn Casey. Detroit’s Shadow is a life-sized crocheted reproduction of a 1916 Model N Ford engine in steel and copper wire. Using a traditional technique with a hook and single steel wire, Mondro spent over 300 hours creating this amazing lace work. Her work is a tribute to her family who were employed in Detroit’s car industry for over 60 years, doing ‘invisible’ work as the anonymous operators on production lines.

Spectacular lace installation to adorn the Sydney skyline

Thursday 28 July 2011: A gigantic aerial net installation will be a spectacular vision suspended high above the heart of the city from 23 September to 23 October 2011 for Art & About Sydney and funded by the City of Sydney and the Powerhouse Museum.

The colourful, 24 metre wide lace work one of the works from the Powerhouse Museum’s new Love Lace exhibition, will be installed 13 metres above George Street at the Sydney Town Hall. Gently pulsing in the wind, this inspirational piece is the largest of the works in the Love Lace exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum and a spectacular centrepiece for the 10th annual Art & About Sydney.

Winner of the 2011 DESIGN NSW: TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP announced

Thursday 28 July 2011: A love of letters is at the heart of the work by this year’s winner of the prestigious Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship, presented today by the Powerhouse Museum and Arts NSW in partnership with the British Council. Emerging typeface designer and font maker, David Foster intends to use his $18,000 scholarship to study at the highly respected Royal Academy of Art in Den Haag, The Netherlands – one of a few institutions in the world that offers a specialised typography program.

Ground-breaking exhibition by Powerhouse Museum showcases a revolution in lace

From 30 July 2011 the Powerhouse Museum will stage a spectacular, ground-breaking exhibition of contemporary lace works by artists and designers from around the world that showcases lace design in ways never before seen or ever imagined. Around 130 lace works by 134 artists from 20 countries will feature in Love Lace, which will open for Sydney Design 2011. The exhibition is drawn from finalists of the Powerhouse Museum’s third International Lace Award that attracted an outstanding field of 700 entries globally.
