Artist statement
‘Biohazard is a projected animated wallpaper. It is a virtual three-dimensional lace composed of interlinking forms based on the thistle, the national ‘flower’ of Scotland.
Wellington is similar to my home city of Glasgow, yet I have never felt so alien as when confronted with New Zealand’s stringent biosecurity regulations. The fact that I could represent a hazard to New Zealand, simply by transferring something from the familiar place I had come from, made me feel unwelcome. Defensive of my national symbol, I was keen to integrate this ‘biohazard’ into my work.
This virtual output embodies my sense of alienation and dissatisfaction with virtual communication with my family and friends at home. Yet, when the design is projected it has depth and dynamism. Printed on fabric, the design would be flattened, no longer a three-dimensional openwork structure; digitally it retains its complexity and can be displayed in motion.’
