Artist statement
‘This work was inspired by the observation of complex patterns arising in nature and culture — patterns such as those formed by flocking birds and pedestrian traffic. Emergent patterns like these are created not by a single event or rule but incrementally through the interaction of each part with its surroundings.
The process for creating the sculpture began with making wire drawings using the needle lace technique. Requiring no technology and imposing no order beyond the looping of one thread around another, this lace technique allows for adaptation, multiplicity and unpredictability; qualities that characterise the world as I experience it and that fascinate me about emergent patterns in particular.’
