Yuta Badayala (In a New Light)
700 x 1500 (diam) mm
Light shade: hand-woven from pandanus and bush string made with fibre derived from the Kurrajong tree, dyed using local plants
‘Koskela came to us with the idea of doing our weaving on lampshades. I thought it would be interesting to take our traditional Yolngu materials (handmade fibre derived from the Kurrajong tree) and use them on Balanda (non-Indigenous) objects.
The lampshade project was an opportunity to try something new and show our artwork in a new light. I use things I can find at the beach or in the bush around me — like seeds and shells and shark bone and feathers — because they are beautiful and I can do many different things with them. I also like to show other people how they can use things from nature. This is part of keeping my knowledge and culture strong.’
