Artist statement
‘Garden Party is an over-scaled perforated metal and shadow wallpaper for the contemporary interior. Large-scale punched metal flowers overlap and connect to form a whimsical screen or metal wallpaper. It is a digital dialogue of floral metal laces, which mimic the decorative interiors of William Morris and his contemporaries.
Each flower design has been reinterpreted from studies of various laces, and lace-like floral designs, some from the Embroiders Guild collection in Victoria. The flowers have a contemporary digital language, which is very much intended. The digitalisation and scale create an industrial feel, also achieved through the punched metal manufacturing process. The cold, hard perforated hanging metal wall contrasts sharply with the textured floating shadows behind, which are soft and transient.
By referencing traditional lace textiles we tap into the rich intersection of memory, domesticity, and narrative — elevating our work into the hearts of the audience like a handcrafted heirloom.’
