Hand-cut silver metallic leather
Artist statement
‘Within the structure of lace there exist many boundaries that separate space from solid areas. These reflect the Scottish and Australian sides of my cultural heritage.
I selected leather to symbolise my skin and how this is a boundary I exist within. The reflective nature of the material reflects my physical identity to others and also enables the viewer to get a flash of their own reflection, inviting them to connect with the boundaries of their own identity. I have used two separate skins of leather which are joined together to represent the merging of my cultural origins.
All of the solid areas of leather I removed are scattered around the base of the garment, to symbolise the importance of reflecting on where I have come from and how this defines who I am.’
