The Powerhouse Museum Research Library is a reference library supporting the exhibitions, publications and programs of the Museum. Although open to the public by appointment only, it is not a public library and services provided to visitors are dependent on the availability of Library staff. Borrowing rights are restricted to employees of the Powerhouse Museum.
RESEARCH COLLECTION
The Research Library collection dates from the establishment of the Museum in 1880. The collection is diverse and reflects the changing research requirements from the past and anticipates future research needs. The Library collects to support exhibition development, publication production, education programmes, museology and corporate information needs.
The collection size can be roughly calculated at 30,000 books, 1,500 journal titles (400 current subscriptions) and a range of audio-visual and electronic resources. The value of the collection lies in its careful selection, classification and arrangement on open shelves and its development in accordance with the Museum's focus.

INFORMATION SERVICES
A responsive information service is delivered by Library staff and includes a reference service to assist all Library users with their research enquiries. That is, we provide: advice on how to use the Library catalogue, how to use the collection effectively, how to use research tools and access resources available within the Library or externally in other libraries or archives, and how to search the internet effectively. Library staff also provide in-house training on computer and information literacy and research strategies for colleagues within the Museum and the cultural sector.
The Research Library is actively involved in professional groups in the cultural sector and in information and knowledge management projects for the Museum, such as the Museum's intranet development.
