This sculpture located on level 2 of our gallery space is one of the entrants in our Love Lace competition/exhibition. This is the work of artist Michael Snape and is a sculpture that is produced from water jet-cut steel.
Michael’s artist statement reveals:
Lace mostly serves to cut the glare, so rampant here, to eyes accustomed to being treated kindly, by gentler places. Lace is made in humility, an activity of repetition, rhythm, meditation as if the act of making momentous decisions only serves to interrupt and rupture.
Buildings before had lace, architectural eye lashes, to beguile and seduce. Windows have sashes and lashes when adorned by lace. Beyond the overcoat of the masonry, the petticoat hid the naked lives contained within, beneath.
The new technologies equip us, those of us awake enough to employ them, with a new opportunity to make everlasting elaborate designs. With laser (or lacer) cutting, these works test the capacity of the machines that make them. They are exhausted by the effort but agreeable to it.
