Heidelberg River

P2655-7

This is a detail from an early stereo photograph of the Heidelberg River at low tide. It was taken sometime between 1855 and 1860 and to the right we can see the Hotwell Hotel and a line of hansom cabs. Unfortunately we have not been able to identify who the photographer was.

    Heidelberg River??

It looks more like Bristol and the Avon Gorge and river to me.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is incomplete (completed 1864). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifton_Suspension_Bridge for more info and a similar view.

It does indeeed look like an the Avon Gorge and an incomplete Clifton Suspension Bridge. Thanks for pointing this out, we have updated our captioning information in the stores and on the database to reflect this. This updated information should be online at the end of the month when the information is re-harvested. I now know why I couldn’t locate a Hotwell or Rotwell Hotel in Heidelburg, thanks once again Geoff.

Glad to help, and I enjoyed the challenge. Have you got any more? Maybe you can start a “photo puzzle of the week” posting!

    Or, for short, “WTF?”
