Waterfall Mosman

Waterfall Mosman, originally uploaded by Powerhouse Museum.

This image was taken on a shoot earlier this year at a waterfall in Mosman. One of our contacts from Flickr had researched the location of one of our historic images tilted Mosman Bay Falls and managed to find where this historic shot was taken. The falls are located near Reid Park in Mosman and due to this great research we were then able to go and re-photograph the area. This image was photographed further down the base of the waterfall closer to the Park. You can read more about this story here.

If you know this area or have any information about the history of Reid Park and the waterfalls we would love to hear about it.

We are surrounded

This image was taken last Monday during the opening week of our new exhibition Star Wars: where science meets imagination. We have a fantastic group of volunteers that are dressing in character from the films and roaming around the institution at all times of the day. When you walk into the foyer you can be welcomed by Darth Vader or C-3PO.

Are you a fan? Can you name all the characters featured in this shot?

In the backyard

This lovely image of a small child in a backyard-with presumably his father who is chopping wood-comes from our Phillips photographic collection that has recently been added to the Commons project on Flickr. If you go to the all sizes on Flickr you can see more of the interesting details surrounding the child including a very small shoe hanging on the post behind him.

This collection of 194 glass plate negatives has some very unusual, playful, domestic scenes and group portraits. We are currently loading around 10 of these each week to the Commons. If you have any additional information about these plates or a story you would like to share we would love you to leave a comment as there is not a lot of information about the content or the photographer.

Underground car park

Melbourne Uni underground carpark, originally uploaded by roryrory.

This image was taken by one of the members from our Modern Times group on Flickr . This interesting perspective highlights the unusual design of the arched columns that make up sections of the underground car park at Melbourne University.
Our group is seeking images that represent modernism in Australia taken from a contemporary perspective. This could include a site such as Australia Square, the Sydney Opera House, furniture, interiors, fashion and design but really we want to how our audience interprets this era today. If you have any images you can contribute to our group we would love to see them!

Landscape at Tingha

Landscape at Tingha, originally uploaded by Powerhouse Museum.

Earlier this year a few members of staff were fortunate to travel to regional NSW to meet with a few of the amazing women featured in our Indigenous women’s exhibition Yinalung yenu: women’s journey. One of the communities we visited was Tingha, a small town not far from Armidale and Inverell. Tingha was once the largest tin mining town with an estimated population of around 7000 people up until the 1900s when it dropped to several hundreds after the mining boom had stopped.

We arrived in Tingha on a really hot day with only a few people around the local store and the post office. The landscape was dramatic, dry open areas, incredibly large rocks everywhere and an expanse of sky filled with these clouds. Whilst the others were interviewing one of the women about her life and stories I had time to walk around and photograph the surrounding landscape. I found the remnants of this old house with just the foundations, fireplace and water tank left- I wonder about the history and stories surrounding this old home.

You can see more photos of this area on the TINGHA photo gallery.

Exploring Sydney streets

Exploring Sydney streets, originally uploaded by Powerhouse Museum.

This is the third video exploration of the Tyrrell photographic collection that we have uploaded to Flickr recently. This one is different to the others because it is using several of the Tyrrell images taken by Charles Kerry and Henry King as apposed to the previous video stories that were made from one still. This video story is exploring the details in the plates taken around the city streets of Sydney.

That looks familiar

stormtrooper

Yesterday was officially the first day of our new exhibition Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination where you get to see over 80 models, costumes, props and the technologies involved in the films. There was a huge opening last night with over 1000 people in attendance, many photos were taken and some of these will be posted online soon. Our photographers have been busy over several nights photographing the events leading up to the opening. This shot was taken on Monday night where we had a great group of volunteers helping us with the event including dressing up as characters from the films. This was a funny moment captured by Marinco.

Fort Macquarie, Sydney

This image comes from the Tyrrell photographic collection that was taken by Henry King sometime between 1880-1900. This fort, designed by Francis Greenway, was then built1817 and demolished in 1901. It became a tram shed until the 50s then in 1957 Jørn Utzon won a competition to design the world famous Sydney Opera House that occupies this site today.

Check this other reproduction from the State Library of NSW collection ‘Fort Macquarie ca.1870 from Sydney Streets and Buildings, 1861-ca.1900 / chiefly by Kerry & Co’ that has been added to the Commons project on Flickr.

Sandon Point

Sandon Point, originally uploaded by Powerhouse Museum.

This photo was taken on an early morning in October 2003 at Sandon Point – area located between Bulli and Thirroul in the Northern Illawarra region. Sandon Point came to public attention in 2001 when Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy (SPATE) and community groups such as Sandon Point Community Picket joined their forces to fight against proposed development of a new housing estate and an aged care facility. Seven years later and the dispute is still not over. You can read the full story about Sandon Point and the most recent community attempts to block the development on Sandon Point Community Picket.

An unconscious woman on the ground

This image titled ‘An unconscious woman on the ground’ comes from the Phillips photographic collection. This shot was taken as a sequel to this image ‘Two women boxing’. This small collection of just under 200 glass plate negatives has been scanned by us this year. There are a lot of details in these plates that reveal a little bit more about the stories that lie within. When zoomed into this image you can see that the woman has a cup held close to her face and she appears to have a slight smile on her face. This collection features many playful scenes including the two scenes of the women boxing.
