Clifton Gardens

This image of Clifton Gardens1884-1917, Kerry and Co is one of our Tyrrell photographic images on the Commons project on Flickr. This amazing circular wharf situated on the north side of Sydney harbour was a swimming bath that used to extend into Chowder Bay with a very high diving tower on the right hand side. If you use the zooming tool on our collection search you can see a little girl standing at the end of the ferry wharf with the old gaslights just above her. The original glass plate negative has been marked with ’87′ which must be 1887, the year this image was taken. The swimming baths are no longer there, so when did they get removed?

White Rose Cafe

This shot was taken at the White Rose café in the regional town of Binalong, NSW. It was taken in 2002 but appears to be photographed much earlier than this. It was photographed for a publication we were doing called What’s In Store? a history of retailing in Australia .. At the time of shooting the café little had changed over 50 years. There was open box shelving for groceries that lined both sides of the shop, a soda fountain and fruit and vegetables arranged in the windows. This must be the kitchen out the back. Let us know if you have any information about this place, if it still exists or if you have visited this café!

Clouds over Grose Valley

This shot of the Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains was taken as part of a series to trial panoramic stitching of landscapes that we would use later in an exhibition. A museum photographer spent a day in the mountains documenting the area. It turns out that the photographer took shots of a location called Bridal Veil Falls which was taken around the same spot as one of our Tyrrell photographic images from the collection. You can see this comparison in our Tyrrell Today pool on Flickr where contemporary shots are posted from the same location as our historic Tyrrell images that were taken around 1890-1917.

Kangaroo Paw

These amazing flowers were photographed at the home of artist Bronwyn Bancroft. Her front garden is full of these beautiful, red flowers which were such a striking feature as we approached her house. Bronwyn kindly invited us to her home and allowed us to photograph her and her garden for the Indigenous women’s exhibition Yinalung yenu: women’s journey Bronwyn says ‘Having country, knowing country, is essential as an Aboriginal person because when you go home the land looks after you. It regenerates you.’ Bronwyn is speaking at the Museum today for our Talks After Noon program where she will be discussing her life as an Aboriginal woman, artist and mother with stories of her childhood, education and experiences that have shaped her life.

Argyle Cut, Sydney

This image is from our Tyrrell photographic collection that appears on the Commons project on Flickr . It was originally photographed by Henry King c. 1880-1900. I was researching this image yesterday when I noticed that there is a group of clothing hanging from the railings on the overpass in the background. Why was this clothing here, did someone find this to be a convenient place to dry clothes? You can see this clearly on the larger version on Flickr

Jiayuguan

This section of the Great Wall of China was photographed at Jiayuguan or Jiayu Pass. According to Wikipedia the pass is located 6km southwest of the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu and covers an area of more than 33,500 square metres. We sent a Museum photographer to China to photograph the Great Wall and the surrounding landscape for the exhibition The Great Wall of China: dynasties, dragons and warriors Our photographer was there for one month and produced over 3000 digital files which are now in our Photo Library.

Space gallery work

There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes on in the Museum to bring an exhibition to life. This shot of the aerial object clean was taken during the refurbishment of our Space exhibition. The F1 booster rocket which is just out of shot was dusted down and other small satellites were repositioned. We photograph as much of the behind-the-scenes work as we can so that we have a permanent record of how our exhibitions are put together.

Trees from below

This tree was photographed whilst we were working on the Indigenous women’s exhibition Yinalung yenu: women’s journey One of the women featured in the exhibition invited us to the house where she grew up and took us to this bush setting near Shoal Bay where we recorded her story that is featured in the exhibition. This gum tree was located on the bush track where she used to play as a child. It looked amazing, a well established eucalypt with very dramatic, twisting branches. It was shot using a 17mm lens to accentuate the bend in the branches.

Mosman Bay Falls

This great image titled Mosman Bay Falls is a highlight from our Tyrrell photographic collection that is part of the Commons project on Flickr. Our intention was to place this photo on the map so that it can be searched via its location but this is proving to be a difficult task as the location is hard to find. A search has revealed a photograph from The State Library of NSW collection of the same area that has a wider perspective and more content for identification. If you know the location or any other information about Mosman Bay Falls then please post a comment, we would love to know more about this area.

Clouds at Boorowa

These clouds were photographed over a paddock in the regional area of Boorowa, New South Wales, an agricultural area located 321 km south-west of Sydney. The clouds depicted in this image are a mix of stratus and cumulus. Clouds are divided into these two categories which refer to whether they are layered or convective. They are then divided into four more groups depending on their altitude. Check this search on Google Images and see if you can find another image with a mix of these two cloud types.

This was photographed for the exhibition EcoLogic: creating a sustainable future.
