Architectural detail of a building in Pyrmont, Sydney. Photographed for the 2006 Powerhouse Museum exhibition, Paradise, Purgatory and Hellhole: a history of Pyrmont and Ultimo. The exhibition looked at the transformation of the area into the crowded, highly industrialised and distinctive suburbs of Pyrmont and Ultimo.

Museum construction


The Powerhouse celebrates its 20th anniversary today. The Museum opened in its current location, built in and around the shell of the old Ultimo power station, on 10 March 1988.
The Ultimo power station dates back to 1899 when it was built to power Sydney’s electric tram system, which ceased operatrions in 1963.

Loco 3265 detail


Detail of the reconstruction of Locomotive 3265 at Eveleigh railway workshops, Redfern, NSW. Locomotive 3265 is the 65th locomotive produced in the 32 class. It is being restored with support from a volunteer team working with Museum conservators at Eveleigh.

1st Anniversary


The Powerhouse Discovery Centre: Collection Stores at Castle Hill has welcomed over 20 000 visitors since opening on 10 March 2007.
About 50,000 objects are stored at Castle Hill in this storage and preservation facility.

Railway candle


Candle mounted on a steel nut used by locomotive fitters until the 1940s to inspect underneath locomotives. The mock-up was made by the Locomotive 3265 reconstruction team at Eveleigh Railway workshops.
