photos and stories from the Powerhouse Museum
It has always been common practice for people to have themselves painted or photographed with possessions or objects that help to construct their identity. This little girl shares the portrait space with a doll, seated on the same chair in the right foreground. She also holds a ball in her right hand. These objects may have been her own or possibly provided by the photographer to help create the best possible conditions for a photograph. Either way, the child seems to be perfectly relaxed and comfortable in the studio.
The photograph is a carte de visite, designed for exchange as a gift or memento.
