This photograph showing the Hotel Australia was taken sometime between 1891-1917 by Charles Kerry and Co. It is one of the glass plate negatives from our Tyrrell collection. This hotel was built in the very heart of the city in Castlereagh Street but was unfortunately demolished in 1971 to make way for the MLC centre. To celebrate this iconic hotel and its history the City of Sydney will be hosting Last Drinks – One more round at the Hotel Australia. This video and sound installation project will recreate the famed watering hole where Sydney’s elite rubbed shoulders with art students, intellectuals and young bohemians. If you have any stories to share about this hotel and its time get in touch with producers of Last Drinks as they are seeking photos, stories and memories.
