This photograph is of the corner of George St and Hay St. was taken around 1910. On the right side of the street you can see the Commercial Banking Company Building and behind that an Anthony Horden and Sons ‘Palace’ ‘Emporium’ building. This was built in 1856 and by 1879 housed over 300 employees.

On the left side of the street is the Palace Hotel which in 1910 was licensed to Angus Cameron. Angus was a not above a little tempering with his product for in the same year here appeared before the Central Summons Court accused of selling watered down brandy and whiskey. When it was pointed out his whiskey contained 4.4% water Cameron was unable to explain how it happened and was given the option of a 3 pound fine or 21 days in prison.
