This photograph, from the museum’s Tyrrell collection, is titled ‘Two friends resting under a tree’. The location is unknown but the roots of the tree appear to be those of a Pandanus palm, usually found in the more northern areas of Australia.

The two men, although well dressed, are shown sitting casually in the middle of the bush and it the intention of the photograph may have been slightly humorous, playing on the incongruity between the men’s costume and their environment. The positioning of the two men beside the giant roots of the tree also gives a sense of scale, a device that was sometimes used to emphasise the exotic flora of the Australian landscape, such as in another photograph from the Tyrrell Collection posted previously on Photo of the Day.
