Tandem bicycle hung and shot
August 8th, 2012 by Paula Bray

Eight historic bicycles will be on display at the Powerhouse Museum throughout August 2012, tracing the evolution of this important technology. To capture a selection of images suitable for the introductory panel and object labels, a team spent the best part of a day photographing the bikes in a studio at our Castle Hill stores.
We store our bicycles on custom-made stands with their tyres off the floor. This is best practice, and we followed it during the photo shoot. The conservator, assisted by stores staff and the photographer, carefully removed each bike from its stand and tied it to a hanging bar using white fabric tape. Each bike was also cleaned and weighed, and later returned to its stand, so the session was rather like a production line. With one bike weighing in at 41 kg, it also required some heavy lifting.
The shoot resulted in a wonderful group of images. Of course, in post-production the photographer had some white tape to remove, but it was well worth the effort.
