photos and stories from the Powerhouse Museum
This partially underwater shot was photographed at the Rudder and Grout designed swimming pool at North Sydney located right under the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Jean-Francois hired an underwater camera for the day to get photographs for a digital experience he was producing for our exhibition Modern Times: the untold story of modernism in Australia. This exhibition looked at how modernism impacted all aspects of Australian culture — from art, design and architecture to advertising, photography, film and fashion.
The digital experience featured many pools designed by the architects Rudder and Grout and these were balanced with historic images to produce the immersive that was dedicated to modernist swimming pools.
