This image has just been loaded to the Commons on Flickr in a batch of ten from the Tom Lennon photography archive. This one in particular stood out for me as being quite intriguing. The title is “Group on wharf [farewelling Eric Sheldon and band?]” and according to our database was taken in Sydney in 1934. Sheldon was a dance band leader and the editor of the monthly industry magazine, “The Australian Music Maker and Dance Band News”, 1932-36.

This comes across as a wonderful group portrait but the intriguing element for me is the man at the front of the shot, on the right with the cap on, who appears to be holding some books and a roll of paper. He may have been talking to the person holding the umbrella in front of him. I wonder what he was doing at this time, selling something or just happened to be walking past when the shot was taken.
