Black and white photograph showing a young girl whose hair is in pigtails. She is wearing a shirt buttoned to her neck and her pigtails are wrapped in string. Her hands are visible at the bottom of the image and she is wearing a ring on the middle finger of her left hand.
It was believed ponytails such as these were symbolic of the sun and moon.
This is one of a large number of photographs that were taken by Hedda Morrison (1908-1991) during her years of residence in Peking (Beijing), China 1933-1946.
