Pathways through paradise: oriental rugs from Australian collections

21 August – 30 January 2005

Developed and presented by the Oriental Rugs Society of NSW and the Powerhouse Museum, this visually stunning exhibition of oriental carpets and trappings from Australian public and private collections is augmented by the Powerhouse Museum’s own collection.

Principally in origin from Central and Western Asian, this outstanding collection is sourced from all over Australia and includes pile rugs, carpets and flat woven rugs.

Unlike most beautiful objects these are richly colourful, yet robust and utilitarian. Above all their beauty is an inspiration, as they reflect the ceremonial, religious and artistic aspirations of the people who created them – and evoke the palaces, tents, mosques and churches they were created to adorn.

A touch of paradise
Once you see the Pathways through paradise exhibition you will be itching to touch those opulent and gorgeous rugs—sadly beyond your reach. This program offers everyone (including the children) the chance to feel, smell, and even sit on samples of the world’s most beautiful and exotic oriental rugs whilst they listen to carpet making stories from the Middle East. Consisting of a range of objects to handle, from rug samples and fragments, through to natural dye materials, spinning and weaving tools, our Volunteers will help visitors to explore how the simplest of techniques can lead to designs of unique individuality and beauty. The dais also features a number of children’s activities, including story reading from a magic carpet and treasure hunt trails, identifying key patterns and common motifs.
