A citrus juicer, surfboard fin, water-efficient toilet and a modern take on the traditional chandelier are just some of the remarkable products to be displayed in the 2005 Australian Design Awards.

The FCS H-2, a high performance surf fin that has taken the world by storm since it was tested by six-time world champion Kelly Slater, sits alongside the Caroma Smartflush toilet suite range that features new flushing technology designed to maximise water efficiency and minimize water consumption.

Discover next summer’s answer to the perfect fake tan, a mask used in the treatment of increasingly common sleep apnea, a citrus press designed to extract juice from the smallest lime to the largest grapefruit in seconds and Peony, a modern take on the traditional chandelier, which is made from anodized aluminium and offers atmospheric lighting and dynamic shadows.

Other award-winning designs include Cox Stockman Lawn Tractor, Integrated Communications Cap Lamp – a combined protective and communications device for miners, Sceats KNECT – a collection of optical frames with interchangeable arms, Neuromonics Processor – a device that provides relief from the hearing problem tinnitus, and Protect-It Column Guards – an industrial safety product designed to reduce damage to warehouse racking due to forklift impact

The products selected by the Powerhouse Museum demonstrate excellence not only in design but also innovation, sustainability and a competitive edge that will ensure the Australian companies involved can establish or maintain leading positions in local and global markets.

The 2005 Australian Design Awards exhibition also features some of the innovative designs from the Student Award category, including the Lotus 23 umbrella, Sooth Bug abdominal massager, Lawngriffin lawnmower, Feast portable barbecue, AROMA espresso maker and the ‘mycolour' colour matching system.

The annual Australian Design Awards program aims to showcase the best examples of Australian design and innovation and the high quality of design expertise available to manufacturers in Australia and overseas. Entries are received in a number of categories, from consumer, student and fashion & textiles, to medical & scientific, housing & building, and business. More than 190 products were entered in this year's Australian Design Awards, with 49 of these receiving an Australian Design Mark and a subsequent 20 receiving the Australian Design Award honour.
