2008 Australian International Design Awards

The Powerhouse Museum’s annual selection from the award finalists include a personal tracking device for skiers and snowboarders, a communications device for firefighters, a multi-function boat mooring hook, a test series cricket helmet, and an electronic earplug for communication in loud environments.

The SP1x electronic earplug also received this year’s Powerhouse Museum Design Award, given to a design that has the potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of health, wellbeing or the environment.

Each year the Powerhouse Museum exhibits finalists from the Australian International Design Awards, selecting those that showcase excellence in design as well as innovative use of technology or materials to provide significant benefits to the user.

A selection of designs from the student category of the awards will also be displayed including a shoulder brace designed for use in post-operative rehabilitation, a portable exhaust fume filtration unit, and a window and lighting system that absorbs energy from the sun to create LED power at night.

Alongside this year’s selection is a retrospective of previous winners from the Awards’ 50-year history. Iconic designs including the Wiltshire Staysharp Knife, Stackhat helmet, the Décor wine carrier with chiller and the Energizer Double Barrel Torch are just some that have become household names.
