The Grael polysomnogram. Outerspace Design and Compumedics Ltd.
Each year the Powerhouse Museum exhibits finalists from the Australian International Design Awards (AIDA), selecting those that showcase excellence in design as well as the innovative use of technology or materials to provide significant benefits to the user.
This year, the annual selection from the AIDA finalists includes:
- a sporty asthma inhaler with a unique retractable mouthpiece
- the new Cochlear Hybrid System which combines a hearing aide with a cochlear implant
- the world’s first battery-heated wetsuit.
But the winner of this year’s Powerhouse Design Award is the Grael polysomnogram. This is a testing device for sleep disorders and represents excellence in product, software and electronics design. Its smart and streamlined form integrates innovation, sustainability, and user-friendly features. It is an Australian product with the potential to make a significant impact worldwide in the quality of health and wellbeing of those suffering from sleep disorders.
A selection of designs from the student category of the awards will also be displayed. These include:
- an inflatable wetsuit vest, designed to bring the wearer to the surface in seconds
- a water disinfection unit, made for use in Third World countries
- an electrically heated lunchbox.
This exhibition is supported by Australian International Design Awards, a division of Standards Australia
