With spring in the air and warm night breezes it’s time to pamper and preen your bicycle and take to the road.
Guaranteed to appeal to crafters, craft lovers and bike-riders alike Craft Punk: Bike BeSpoke pays tribute to the exhilaration a bike ride can offer while lowering that carbon footprint –definitely crafting for good! Our various crafting zones are led by creative professionals and passionate bicycle enthusiasts.
Bike BeSpoke is part of the Sydney Rides Festival 2011, produced by City of Sydney.
Spring Bling Your Bike
15, 16 October, 10.00am – 4.00pm
As spring moves into full swing, raffia, wool and cord flowers are just the right bling for your bike! Easily made on special daisy looms in lots of beautiful colours, textures and patterns they can be adapted to add zing to your bike or any garment. Try your hand at making different patterns, shapes and sizes. Materials and equipment supplied.
Beginners level. Ages 10 years and over (children must be accompanied by an adult).

Crash Crochet Chic with Cecilie Knowles
15, 16 October, 10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm
For the bicycling lady and gent, the need to be safe while cycling at night can get in the way of looking stylish. Artist Cecilie Knowles will show you how to create high viz jewellery that will keep you road safe while looking sweet! Using reflective cord and simple crochet and knotting, Cecilie will make a bracelet in the morning and necklace/sash in the afternoon. All materials and equipment supplied.
Cecilie Knowles lives and works in Sydney. Her sculptural work is a playful exploration of natural forms utilising free-form crochet to create unique, wearable objects.

Knit, Pedal Purl: with Fiona Donovan

Join the queen of hand-knits Fiona Donovan as she takes you through the paces of how to knit useful cycle accoutrements to pimp your bike. In the morning session Fiona will show you how to make cool bike handle-bar covers. In the afternoon session you will learn how to make a classy little bike musette bag to keep your goodies safe while riding. All materials and equipment supplied.
Fiona is the force behind the ‘missfee’ knitting blog which claims to have been keeping sheep naked since 2003. Fiona has knitted a staggering number of beautifully crafted hand-knit garments.

Punk Bike BeSpoke Basket with Liesl Hazelton

Ever hankered for a cool looking bike basket but never been able to find just the right edgy design. Here is an opportunity to make your own customised version that will turn heads as it hangs off your handle bars. Liesl Hazelton has created a design that oozes bike bespoke, using a twist on traditional weaving techniques and recycled materials. Low carbon footprint but high in style, this basket can also be adapted to take shopping. Materials and equipment provided.
Liesl Hazelton is an innovative designer and jeweller who regularly exhibits her work in galleries. She manages to mix a cool aesthetic with carbon neutral ethics. Liesl was the recipient of the NSW Design Travelling Scholarship, 2009.

Bike Pamper

Sick of a flat tyre ruining your day? Want to maintain your beloved bike, but not sure how? Join Hugh Ellens and Oliver Cashman, long-time members of the much respected Cycle-Re-Cycle Club, in these hands-on workshops. You will learn some fast and simple tips to diagnose and fix common bike problems.
The following topics will be covered: brake adjustments; tube patching, front and rear gear adjustment; basic wheels truing; seat adjustment; chain maintenance; bike rack attachment (demonstration only) and general trouble-shooting. The afternoon workshops with Oliver will also reveal how to attach DIY panniers to a bike rack using recycled materials (demonstration only). Bring your bike and small roadside tool kit if you have one. All tools and materials provided.
