This is a finely detailed static (non- steaming) model of locomotive 1948 originally built in Sydney in 1884 by Henry Vale and Co. The model represents one of the longest surviving steam locomotives in Australia, in operation until 1971. These 0-6-0 locomotives undertook freight service at a time when the railway network was growing at an unprecedented rate, with routes nearing Tamworth, Wagga and Orange. They became the A93 class in 1889 and renumbered Z19 class in 1924. By this time there were 77 locomotives in the class, numbered from 1901 to 1977. Locomotive 1948 was modified during its service life and the model represents its appearance in its final form with a Belpaire boiler, Throw cab with circular window, clack vales on the boiler, Westinghouse brakes, reverse running sand boxes and a six wheel tender. The model is a 5-inch gauge and was made by Barry Potter between 1987-9.
