Object statement
Ceramic form, 'Aspire', earthenware, Rod Bamford, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1988-89
This form expresses Rod Bamford's (b. 1958) interest in ceramic traditions and the symbolic associations of geometric forms. The spiralling cone suggests the energy of a driving tool and also refers to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel and the 'path of civilisation'.
He combines traditional and contemporary processes through using extruded clay, printed (decal) motifs and press-moulded reliefs.
Rod Bamford is a Sydney based ceramic artist and teacher. Born 1958.

Description
Ceramic form, 'Aspire', earthenware, Rod Bamford, Sydney, Australia, New South Wales, 1988-89

Ceramic sculpture of red brown earthernware, in five pieces, which fit together to form a hollow cone, with deep, gouged spiral groove from base to apex, revealing hole pattern in the extruded clay body. Partly glazed surface, of clear glaze over white slip. With decals of roses, the glaze deliberately checked and crazed. Areas of press moulded decoration, including faces and ivy leaves.
