'Some brooches that are round' by Sally Marsland
This image is not currently available as a higher resolution full colour zoom. This may be because this object has not been moved from storage and re-photographed in recent times.

Sally Marsland (b.1969) is a BA and BA Honours graduate (1993, 1996) of the Gold and Silversmithing department at RMIT, Melbourne. She has also set up a studio in Melbourne, taught at RMIT and in 1999 is currently studying with Otto Kunzli at the well-respected Academy of Fine Art, Munich. Kunzli has visited Australia and has had a continuing influence on jewellers and metalsmiths here. Marsland was awarded an Australia Council development grant in 1996, a Queen's Trust Grant for young Australians in 1998, and a DAAD Stipendium in 1999. She has exhibited consistently since 1992 and won the City of Hobart Art Prize (jewellery) in 1997.

This group of brooches, designed as a single work, is a very fine example of the characteristic groupings Marsland has developed over recent years. Especially notable are the inter-relationships she makes between the different materials, colours and forms, and the way they are are arranged in relation to one another.
Her study in Germany is encouraging a different direction in her work, and this set of brooches marks the culmination of an important stage of her career.

Especially notable are the inter-relationships she makes between the different materials, colours and forms, and the way they are arranged in relation to one another.
She has always been interested in small collections of objects and this set of brooches marks the culmination of an important stage of her career.
New work in Germany is taking a different, but related direction. Some has included cast paint over wax forms. Other work combines found objects, like bottles, with her own objects (hollow forms sometimes cups) in to 'still lives' that are displayed on shelves.

Made by Sally Marsland (b.1969) in Melbourne, Australia, 1997.
The brooches were exhibited in Japan in late 1999, through Gallery Funaki, Melbourne.
