Othello brand pencils made by Schwan (Swan Pencil Co) of Nuremberg, Germany.

Used by the donor Patrice Connelly
Used by the donor Patrice Connelly (born 1956) while attending primary school at Coogee Public School in the mid 1960s.

She attended high school at the Conservatorium High School, completing her HSC in 1973. She studied for a Bachelor of Music at Sydney University, worked as a librarian, became involved in the Early Music Association and completed a Masters degree in Music at Sydney University in the early 1990s.

Her father was Harry Thomas Connelly, a pianist and songwriter who wrote songs recorded by Col Joye, Buddy Williams, Jimmy Little, Jimmy Parkinson, and Val Doonican. He worked for many years at the ABC as a music copyist.

"I remember covering my exercise books very carefully in brown paper and using these gummed labels. I remember covering my text books with brown paper and then covering them with plastic again.

"I remember in primary school the filling of the ink well from a large jar in the musty smelling wooden cupboard.

"I remember the clank of milk bottles in their metal trays. I used to take chocolate Quik to school so I could drink it.

Box of pencils, 'Othello' brand, wood/graphite/card, used by Patrice Connelly, Swan Pencil Co, Australia/ Germany, 1966-1967.

Cardboard box with hinged lid containing six identical blue pencils, each sharpened but hardly used.

The box is covered in silver paper with a printed design of a pencil overlaid by the brand name Othello and logo of a red swan. Company details are printed on the interior of the lid.he word 'Othello' and a swan logo. Inside the lid is the text: 'Stabilo, Othello, Swano, Schwan-Bleistift-Fabrik, Nurnberg/Swan Pencil Co, Nuremberg, Germany.

Each blue lead pencil is painted in stripes of two shades of green with a blue strip at the top edge and a white top with blue swan logo. Model number and brand name is stamped in silver on the side of each pencil.
