Object statement
Part tea set , bone china (porcelain), transfer printed, 'Rouge Flambe', Royal Doulton, Burslem, Stafforshire, England, c 1910
Among the most exciting developments at Doulton's Burslem factory in the early 1900s were radiant red 'transmutation' glazes, some with shades of green or blue. They were made by adding copper oxide to the glaze and controlling or experimenting with the effects of reduced oxygen supply in the kiln during firing. One such glaze was rouge flambé made between 1900 and 1914. This set is a wonderful example. Doulton's rouge flambé ware were first shown at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair.
