Object statement
Figure, Madonna and child, wood / metal / silk, maker unknown, Italy, 1800
This processional figure of the Madonna and child came from a church in Ragusa, Sicily, and was purchased by the donor from an antique shop in Taormina. The figures were carried by men through the streets to mark a feast day or special celebration for women, and were also placed on the altar.

Madonna wears an 18th century-style red silk bodice and skirt with couched gold thread and of floral and foliate design, and a full-length cape of cream silk with appliqué gold embroidered starts. She exudes an air of calm spirituality as the Child gives blessing to those that gaze upon it. With its finely detailed carving and exquisite gold embroidery, it is an excellent addition to the Museum's collection of ecclesiastical items and textile collection.
The Madonna and child was made in Italy in 1800.
