This puppet was made in Solo or Yogyakarta, central Java, Indonesia.

The Buta Terong is known as the eggplant giant because of the shape of his nose. He often appears in battles, along with other ogres and giants.

Description
Shadow puppet, Buto Terong character, buffalo hide, Solo or Jogyakarta, Java, Indonesia, 1980-1986.

Shadow rod puppet of the Buto Terong or Eggplant giant character, two dimensional made of buffalo leather, painted gold with blue/green and pink headdress and clothing. The face is red with black highlighted features, a large nose, teeth, two fangs, large round crossed eyes. Only one movable arm with rod attached, the other arm is fixed. The bamboo hand rod and support extends from the head to the foot in a curved manner, widening at the bottom for a hand grip.
