Object statement
Needle lace panel, 'Wheels', linen thread, Jean Goldberg, (1928-2010) Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1985
Jean Macdonald Goldberg was an important artist whose medium was needle lace. The concepts portrayed in her work were always witty and innovative, often using everyday and mundane topics such as this newspaper advertisement for cars. Other colourful needle lace works were entitled 'Men digging up the street' (1998); 'Looking for the big end' (1995) in which a man looks in the engine and a woman is looking at the dashboard and the boot; 'Supporters' (1993) an image of Jean's feet after a hot day; 'The red queen hunting and gathering' (1996) depicting herself rushing through the supermarket.
Goldberg's work is well represented in public and private collections in Australia and her lively work is an example to artists of many persuasions. It has inspired many to become practitioners of this unusual art form.
Created in 1985
Exhibited in the Tamworth Fibre Exhbition in 1986-1987, then toured by the Regional Galleries of NSW

Purchased directly from the artist.

Jean passed away at 82 years of age on 31 January 2010.
