Description
Shawl, twill weave, wool/silk, Norwich, c.1835. Woman's square twill weave shawl, drawloom woven in scarlet wool with regularly spaced floral motifs throughout. The motifs are also twill woven, with weft floats on the reverse, in blue, green, black, white and pink wool and yellow silk. They are linked by black zig zag meanders. The shawl is has a knotted scarlet silk fringe on all four sides. It was woven in Europe, most probably in Norwich, in about 1835 (Christina Sumner 11.7.96).
