The Melbourne firm of Stokes and Son (established 1856) is well recognised as Australia's leading medal maker but it was also the first manufacturer of plated table silverware in Australia. Stokes giftware with Australian motifs included kangaroo and emu paperwights, napkin rings and even car radiator macots. While hundreds of items were available in electroplated silver there was a limited demand for sterling silver with the exception of napkin rings, such as these, which were popular gifts in the early 20th century.
This object record is currently incomplete. The information available may date back as far as 125 years. Other information may exist in a non-digital form. The Museum continues to update and add new research to collection records.
