Description
Box sextant with case, brass / leather, made by Brush & McDonnell, Melbourne, Australia, c 1872
Cylindrical brass sextant in leather case. The sextand has pull out eyepieces, silvered scale and vernier magnifier on a hinged arm. The brass cover screws onto the base as a handle. The leather case is embossed with a flower on both sides. The case has an attached cover which fastens with a strap. The inside of the case is lined with purple velvet like material. . Maker's mark on sextand, embossed stamp on case.
Made: Brush & MacDonnell; Melbourne, Victoria; 1867 - 1877
Marks
The sextand is inscribed above the sacle 'Brush and MacDonnell Melbourne'. The case has a white embossed stamp with 'S3183' on the front. Below that on the stamp is six pounds. The lid of the leather case has the initials 'HMH' with the date 1872 carved into it.
