2001/84/233 Postcard (3), paper, Paralympic Games, Sydney, 2000, made by Avant Card and the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee, 1999 and 2000

Object statement
Postcard (3), paper, Paralympic Games, Sydney, 2000, made by Avant Card and the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee, 1999 and 2000
These three postcards - two made by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC) and one made by Avant Card - were designed to promote the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. One card, with its colour photograph of Kylie Minogue, advertised tickets to the Opening Ceremony that would feature the singer as a key part of the entertainment. The two remaining cards represent Paralympic athletes, including Louise Sauvage, and advertise tickets to the sports events. Though they are quite different in design, these items reflect an energetic, positive image of the Paralympic Games, distilling public perception that the event would be secondary to the preceding Olympic Games. Two of the three cards feature contact details for ticket agencies and information services.

The Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games commenced on 18 October 2000 with the opening ceremony held at Stadium Australia. Over the following ten days, the event hosted 18 sports and brought together 4000 athletes from 125 different countries. Tickets to the opening and closing ceremonies sold rapidly, while reserved seating and day passes attracted 1,108,914 spectators to the sports events.
All three postcard designs feature photographs: a colour photograph of Kylie Minogue; a black and white photograph of Louise Sauvage; and a highly pixilated, colour photograph of a female Paralympian. The cards do not include the names of designers or photographers, however, the Avant Card postcard of Louise Sauvage is numbered '3702'.

The Australian company, Avant Card, printed the postcard of Louise Sauvage in 1999. The Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee printed the postcards of Paralympians in 2000.
These three items were distributed free of charge to promote the coming Paralympic Games. Avant Card postcards are typically distributed at cafes, theatres and other public venues.

Made for and owned by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee and donated to the Powerhouse Museum after the Games.
